Auto Blog News Feed: China's solar road will charge cars as they drive

Thu, 04/12/2018 - 22:30

In Jinan, China, there's a section of highway over which some 45,000 vehicles drive every day. A company called Qilu Transportation Development Group is converted about two-thirds of a mile of that roadway to generate solar electricity — enough to power the highway lights and 800 homes. Qilu Transportation isn't stopping there, though. Looking forward to a future of electric and autonomous driving, the goal is to make the road smart. Eventually, it will be able to provide more accurate tra

Auto Blog News Feed: Moving sculptures on the beaches of The Netherlands

Thu, 04/12/2018 - 21:57

Sculptures that can move? These mobile "animals" are the artistic vision of Dutch artist and kinetic sculptor Theo Jansen. Since 1990 Jansen has been creating a new form of art in motion that lives on beaches. Jansen's animals are wind powered and were seen in a BMW commercial in 2006. The skeletal structure of each animal is made from electrical tubes bound together by zip ties. A rotating spine in the internal structure of the creatures allow the animals to move forwards and backwards. Jansen

Auto Blog News Feed: 2019 VW Jetta vs. best-selling compact cars: How they compare on paper

Thu, 04/12/2018 - 21:30

As the brand's best-selling car, the 2019 Volkswagen Jetta needs to be good to maintain its sales, if not grow them. We just drove it, and found the latest Jetta to be stylish, frugal, and decently priced, if not exciting. But we also wanted to see how it compares on paper to other cars in the segment. So we've assembled the specifications from the four best-selling compacts on the market in order of their sales starting with the best-selling Honda Civic, followed by the Toyota Corolla, Nissan S

Thu, 04/12/2018 - 20:40

At last year's Geneva Motor Show, Aston Martin launched its AMR line of limited-edition, high-performance models. The first two models presented were a Vantage AMR Pro designed only for the track, and a Rapide AMR that's was a slightly hopped up version of the Aston sedan. Though they were fully revealed back then, it seems Aston Martin has still been doing a bit of testing, since one of our spy photographers caught the Rapide AMR at the Nurburgring.

Thu, 04/12/2018 - 20:13

We know the Ford Shelby GT500 is coming. We don't have many details, but the unexpected teaser we got back in January did say the car will have more than 700 horsepower. It seems the Dodge Challenger Hellcat and Chevy Camaro ZL1 have some competition on the way. Everything we've seen until now has been veiled, but this new batch of spy photos gives us our best look yet at the hottest Ford Mustang.

Auto Blog News Feed: 2019 Volkswagen Jetta First Drive Review | More style, not much more excitement

Thu, 04/12/2018 - 18:30

The 2019 Jetta is a car Volkswagen really needs to get right. Last year, it was VW's best-selling model in America by a wide margin. And although the new Tiguan and Atlas have been propelled ahead so far this year by America's crossover obsession, the Jetta is still VW's best-selling car, beating the Passat and the Golf. Put simply, the new Jetta has got to be good.

Let us now turn our attention to Necco Wafers. Specifically, the very fate of the age-old multi-colored gelatin candy, which is offered in seven flavors, amid the financial crisis of Necco, officially known as the New England Confectionary Co. What does this have to do with automobiles, you might ask? Well, a 23-year-old Florida woman named Katie Samuels has such fond memories of eating the confection as a child that she offered her car in exchange for wholesaler Candystore.com's remaining stoc

Auto Blog News Feed: New Orleans resident keeps getting speeding tickets for his parked car

Wed, 04/11/2018 - 22:15

Speed cameras have dipped below the surface of the news cycle, yet the programs often remain a nuisance. New Orleans resident Donald Schultz provides the latest example of municipal malfeasance: A speed camera has issued at least ten speeding citations since 2011 to the Nissan Frontier that Schultz parks in front of his house. A car doing more than the posted 35-mph limit triggers the camera, located in the median of Canal Boulevard, but the camera reads the stationary Frontier's license plate i

The last Porsche 911 Speedster capped off the old 997-generation 911. It was basically a convertible Carrera GTS with a slight humpback and a number of performance and styling changes. A new Speedster has been rumored to be in the works for a while. These new spy photos show that Porsche is indeed working on a new drop-top 911, and it looks far more GT3 than GTS.

Auto Blog News Feed: Chevy Colorado ZR2 Bison trademark filed, could be upfitted overlander

Wed, 04/11/2018 - 17:50

The Chevy Colorado ZR2 is a favorite here at Autoblog. It was a finalist for our most recent Technology of the Year award thanks to some trick spool-valve suspension. It's supremely capable off road without giving up anything on the streets. It looks like Chevy may have something bigger planned for the ZR2. AutoGuide reports that GM recently filed a trademark for the name "ZR2 Bison." In fact, we may have already seen a preview of the truck last fall with the Colorado ZR2 AEV concept at SEMA.
