A federal judge in Detroit on Tuesday ordered the chief executives of automakers General Motors Co and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV (FCA) to meet by July 1 to try to resolve GM's racketeering lawsuit. U.S. District Court Judge Paul Borman called on GM CEO Mary Barra and FCA CEO Mike Manley to meet in person to try to resolve a case that could drag on for years.

Daylan McLee thought for a minute it might have been a small earthquake until a relative came running inside to say there had been a car crash involving a police cruiser outside the apartment in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, about 45 miles south of Pittsburgh. McLee ran outside and pulled an officer from the mangled patrol car as flames began to spread into the cabin. Police officials and others have credited McLee with saving the officer's life after the Sunday evening crash.

China re-classified petrol-electric hybrid vehicles on Monday so they get more favourable treatment than all-petrol or diesel counterparts under new clean car rules, making it easier for automakers to meet environment quotas and offer more choice. China has some of the world's strictest rules regarding the production of fossil-fuel vehicles, as it battles unhealthy levels of air pollution in its crowded cities. Plug-in hybrid technology differs from that of petrol-electric hybrid vehicles.

Ryota Kawamata hadn't driven for more than a decade, but as Japan's COVID-19 crisis worsened in May, his employer near Tokyo rented him a car so he wouldn't have to use public transport. "There are places where I can't go without a car," said Kawamata, who recently paid 30,000 yen ($280) for a five-hour refresher course to hone his driving skills. As Japan emerges from its coronavirus lockdown, restaurants and offices are practicing social distancing, but public transport doesn't require it.
